New medical students to help care for Logan

23 May 2024
Logan Hospital is thrilled to announce the arrival of the inaugural cohort of Students in Medicine (SiM) within Metro South Health.

The eight talented SiMs have joined the ranks to lend their expertise across various services.

Under the direct guidance of medical officers or as assigned by clinical team leaders, the SiMs will undertake a range of crucial responsibilities.

SiMs Coordinator Stephanie McAuliffe said their responsibilities encompassed a range of clinician support services, including but not limited to general ward tasks such as scribe services, assisting with patient streaming and providing surgical assistance for routine procedures under the supervision of medical specialists.

“It's important to note that all surgical assistance by SiMs will strictly adhere to obtaining necessary patient consents prior to any procedure,” she said.

“The idea of introducing SiMs as paid employees came to light during the pandemic when they contributed to vaccination efforts, COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, and supporting hospital-at-home initiatives.”

Logan and Beaudesert Health Services Director of Medical Services Dr Dale Seierup said the SiMs role enriched the medical cohort and offered invaluable learning opportunities to the SiMs as they progress in their studies.

“Logan Hospital warmly embraces this talented group and looks forward to a promising journey ahead as they become integral members of our esteemed team,” he said.
